Built for how African businesses actually work

Research, analytics, and applied AI for organisations that do not have a data team and cannot afford to decide on assumption.

The Gap We Exist to Close

Every decision is made across a gap. On one side is data: transactions, complaints, invoices, stock counts, whatever your customers told your team last week. On the other is something you have to do. Almost none of that data ever makes the crossing.

Three instruments, one job, which is why one firm does all three.

Research closes that distance from the outside, going and getting the evidence that does not exist yet. Analytics closes it from the inside, from what you are already sitting on. AI is the first instrument that crosses the distance itself.

Almost every AI playbook assumes a large engineering team and room to experiment. Businesses in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kampala and Dar es Salaam get told to adopt AI with no guidance on what that means for their systems, their budget, or their customers. We work the other way round, starting from the decision in front of you, and often the honest answer is a two-week automation or a reliable weekly report rather than anything with AI in the name.

How We Work With Clients

Four commitments that shape every engagement, whichever practice area you start in.

  1. Evidence before opinion

We start from the decision you need to make and the evidence that would change your mind. Occasionally that means telling you the research is not worth commissioning.

  2. You own everything

Source code, data, models, and documentation transfer to you. If you want to take it in-house after six months, nothing stops you.

  3. Prove it before you scale it

Every engagement is scoped to one task with one measurable return, so you see it work before the budget follows.

  4. Built for this market

WhatsApp-first customers, mobile money, variable connectivity, and locally recruited enumerators. This is where we operate, not a context we read about.

Kelvin Ndungu Kinyanjui

Founder & Principal Consultant

Kelvin founded Chakam Group after six years consulting on research, analytics and applied AI for organisations across East Africa: in healthcare, retail and financial services.

He led the AI upskilling programme for executive staff at the Bank of Tanzania, and has designed AI roadmaps and governance frameworks for growing companies deciding where to commit their first serious AI budget.

The systems he builds are meant to be handed over: forecasting models, document processing pipelines and retrieval systems that clients own outright and run without him.

Research methodology before data science, and data science before AI engineering, which is why the work starts with the question rather than the tool.
